Sad news to report:  We lost another member recently.  Yosh Sakazaki passed.  As of this writing I have no more information but I’m sure if you contact his regular playing partners they could have more info..   Tom  Sasamoto, Fumio Kinoshita,  Victor Shima, Ken Sakamoto, respectively.

Tournament summary:

The APRIL tournament was played as scheduled, on an unusual weather day.  The wind was quite brutal.  We normally don’t get that strong of a wind coming out of the northwest.   It was at least a “2 club wind!”     The greens were dried out and fast!

EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT!:

WALT JOHNSON ACED THE 16TH HOLE!  What a thrill for our group (Proctor, Dudley, Peterson) to witness that shot.  Walt used a 4 hybrid for the perfect shot!

I like how the numbers seem to workout:  The 4th month of the year the 16th of the month on the 16th hole and a 4 hybrid, all led to a hole in one!!!

MEMBERS NOTE: There were some scorecards that were a bit off.  PLEASE remember to validate and sign your tournament scores before turning them in.

There were good scores as usual.

A flight.

Danny Butler carded a 70 for the top low gross prize.  And, Big Bob Acosta took 2nd with a 72!

Low net went to CHARLES KIRKSEY with a 77 net 67!    Great!

B flight.

Low gross went to 3 players with 83’s. James Brown, Sherman Shoup, and Dean Quick, respectively.

Low net went to Robert Louis Allen with a net 70.             OK!

Due to the fact Gene Hardy has abdicated his position of Vice-President, a VSMGC board election was held on Tuesday April 30th to elect a new Vice-President.

Current president Billie Proctor nominated Dennis Peterson.

The election results were 7 yeas and one abstention in favor of Dennis Peterson becoming the new Vice-president of the club.

 APRIL 2013   MONTHLY NEWS ITEMS:

Tournament summary:

The MARCH tournament was played as scheduled, on an ordinary weather day.  Not too hot not too cold.    The greens were a bit slow.  Lots of poa annua growing, slowing putts down.

Maybe cutting them a 64th lower would help?

FYI: Definition: Poa annua is a type of grass sometimes found on golf courses and sometimes used as the putting green grass, including at Pebble Beach Golf Links AND the Links at Victoria.

Poa annua does have one quality that some golfers don't appreciate. This includes Tiger Woods, who is not a fan of poa annua greens. That quality is this: Different strains of poa annua can grow at different rates during the sunny part of each day. That means that in the late afternoon, after a day of growing time, a poa annua green might be less smooth - bumpier - than it was throughout most of the day.

There were good scores as usual.

A flight.

Big Bob Acosta took the top low gross prize with a 70!    Danny Butler carded a 72 for 2nd!

Low net went to Roman Peebles with a 76 net 71!   Nice rounds by Shane Carlson & Burt Lee.

B flight.

Charles Kirksey won low gross prize with a 79!

Low net went to Charles Hendrix with an 83 net 68.   Very Nice!!

C flight.

Our club president Billie Proctor won low gross prize with an 82.  OK!

Bobby Uehara took low net score of 65.   Nice!

See complete results on the following page.

Tiger Woods won another tournament, too.

You’ve heard the phrase, “Horses for courses”.

Well, not only has he won Arnold Palmer’s tournament 8 times but, 22 years ago Tiger won the first of his three U.S. Junior Amateurs at Arnold’s Bay Hill course.

MARCH 2013

 MESSAGE FROM YOUR BOARD

So far this year there has been a low turnout on regular Tuesday play.  Now there may be many reasons not to play, but if we don’t turn out during the 7:30 – 9:30 time slot we could lose that time slot.   Remember, practice makes perfect!

Get those rounds in and win some money in tournament play!!

HEADS UP GOLFERS:  Green fees have increased at Victoria!!

I know it cost $27 per with ½ cart now.  Check with the course at (310) 323-4174

REMINDER:  Tournament entry fees are $45.   Subject to change due to higher green fees..

IN MEMORIUM:  Former member Manuel ‘Manny’ De La Cruz passed away last month.   For those that knew him, you can get more information from Pete at (322) 204-7610.

Tournament summary:

The February Partners best ball tournament was held as scheduled on a spectacularly bad day!  When the weather is bad like that there will be some dropouts.  There were many “fair-weather” golfers who said “maybe next time!”  Still, a lot of guys soldiered on through the rain and cold to post some decent scores.

Including the teams of BOB ACOSTA & DANNY BUTLER to take the low gross prize.    Second low gross went to SHERMAN SHOUP & CRAIG CONANT.

Low net went to the Greg Dupre and Norm Potter team with a net 55 !

Holy strokes, Batman!!  Did they play between rain drops?!

There were fine scores by the teams of NORRIS/TODD, J. JACKSON, T. CONANT as well.

This topic came up the other day:  What happens if you make a hole one on a blind hole but don’t see the ball and you declare the ball lost?

One of the realities of golf is that you can't see a golf ball at the bottom of the cup unless you're standing directly above it. You might be playing a blind hole and think your ball has been lost because it doesn't appear to be on the green. You tee up another ball and play it to conclusion then discover your first ball at the bottom of the cup. Have you ruined your hole in one? No, thank heavens. Whatever you did after the ball settled down next to the flag is irrelevant. The rules state that the hole has been completed once the ball is hit from the tee and falls into the hole. If you mistakenly play your opponent's ball before discovering your own ball in the cup, it's still a hole in one for the same reason. In match play, where players in head-to-head competition count holes rather than strokes, a player with a hole in one might not look in the cup and consider his ball to be lost. He might concede the hole without bothering to tee up another ball and play the hole again. If he has the presence of mind to look in the cup, he can still claim the hole if he discovers his ball before his opponent reaches the next tee.

 MESSAGE FROM YOUR BOARD

REMINDER:  Tournament entry fees are $45.

Tournament summary:

The January tournament was held as scheduled on a spectacular day!  When the weather is good like that there will be some outstanding scores.  Danny Butler reports that the greens were in fine shape and there were 2 eagles, Shane Carlson on 15 and Danny Butler on 10.   Those eagles helped those guys to great rounds of 68 to take the A flight low gross prize.

A flight low net went to Ray Young, who carded a 73 net 67.

B flight low gross went to Tom Sasamoto & Leadie Phillips with scores of 80 each!

Tom bettered his age by 2 strokes?  Nice!!

B flight low net went to Horace Davis with a 61.  61??  Wow!!

See all results on next page.

Due to some slow play in the January tournament, I am reprinting the following:

VSMGC PACE OF PLAY RULES:

Effective May 15, 2012 the following rules regarding pace of play and positioning will be enforced during tournament play.

  1. Pace of play is defined by the amount of time it takes to complete 18 holes.  This time may vary by any or all conditions, such as, weather, looking for lost balls too long, waiting for course workers to clear, slow players in your group, or simply not playing ready golf where applicable.

  1. Positioning is defined as keeping pace with the group in front of your group.  When your group reaches the tee box and the group in front of you has left the green, you are out of position.  Your group must get back in position on the next hole in order to avoid a penalty of one (1) stroke per player in your group.

  1. The following group will monitor your group.  If the group that follows you can see that the green in front of you is clear, your group is out of position!  Once the ‘out of position’ has been determined, your group will be reported to the tournament committee.

NOTE:  Penalties will only be applied if your group fails to get back in position by the next hole.

For example:  Out of position for the first time, no penalty.  On the second occurrence of being out of position, a penalty will be imposed.

  1. This policy is intended to address issues such as slow play, groups finishing 2 to 3 holes and/or some 30 or more minutes behind the group in front of them.

  1. Reminder:  If individual players are not concerned about pace of play and staying in position, then that person may cause ALL players to be penalized!!

Just repeat the word, POSITIONING!!

ATTENTION GOLFERS..

JANUARY 2013 NEWS                          HAPPY NEW YEAR!

MESSAGE FROM YOUR BOARD

SCRAMBLE RULES SHEET

Each group competes as a team for the LOWEST TEAM SCORE for the 18 holes.
METHOD OF PLAY

1.       Each group will select a Team captain prior to teeing off.

2.       Play begins with each member of the group teeing off.

3.       With the agreement of the other members of the group, the team captain decides which drive is the most desirable.

4.       The other members of the group pick up their balls and proceed to the spot of the selected drive, where they will hit their second shots.

5.       The better of the second shots is then chosen. The group will then hit all their putts (or third shots) from that spot.

6.       This procedure continues until the ball is in the hole.

7.      At the end of each hole, the score for the group is recorded on the card.

Note: The maximum score allowed is double par. After that, simply pick up the balls and move on to the next hole.

NOTE:

For example, I've noticed that there are players who've never played with Benny Nickleberry, or Ray Young, or Current club champion Bob Acosta.  It's fun to see some of those long drives by Ray and those amazing putts holed by Nickleberry!!

Bob Acosta and Danny Butler tied for LOW GROSS.

AUGUST 2012

THE 2012 VSMGC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Congratulations to the champion golfers of the year:

A Flight – Low Gross - BOB ACOSTA.   B Flight – Low Gross - YOSH SAKAZAKI

The Club championship was held on schedule on a 2 somewhat cool days for golf.   The course was left to dry for the second round.  That helped some of the ‘short’ hitters to get a bit more distance off the tee (me Peterson, included, I actually was able to reach the long par 4’s in 2) obviously that made for some good scores.

Bob Acosta overcame a 7 shot deficit to win the club championship (A-flight) for the second year in a row!  Besting first round leader Danny Butler by one stroke.  Bob’s second round score of “66” (8 birdies again) was the clincher.   OUTSTANDING!

A and B flight low net prizes went to Charles Kirksey and Robert Louis Allen

Nice playing, guys!

Members,

I propose for an up-coming "Pro-Am" (or "Captain" as the 'Pro') tournament!

Would you like to have the following scramble format in the future?  It would be a "true" scramble format.

The November tournament would be good time.  We normally have a meeting and Turkeys...  Let the board members know what you think…
