SEPTEMBER 2017
Message from your board of directors.

Members: Due to the fact the SCGA has a new operating system we encourage you to submit your 2018 dues renewal as early as possible. Below is a form to complete and put (with your check) in the Sr. Men's mailbox in the pro shop or give to a board member.
The greens at Victoria took a major hit recently. What happened is that their grinder (mower blade sharpener) broke down. The crew went out to mow with DULL blades! The mower did not cut the grass; it pulled the grass blades out of the ground, leaving bare spots all over!! UGH! No time table as to when those greens will recover.
Sadly, we used to have the best greens around! Now??

Tournament summary:

The August tournament was played as scheduled, on a hot and muggy day. The format was a regular low gross, net.
The greens were bad! See above. ^^
There were good scores as usual.

The top A Fight low gross prize went to LEE KORNEGAY and Low net went to BENNY NICKLEBERRY.
The top B Fight low gross prize went to LARRY CULLIVER. Low net (in a tie) went to TOM EGGLESTON & JAMES JACKSON.

AUGUST 2017
THE 2017 VSMGC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Congratulations to the champion golfers of the year:
A Flight – Bob Acosta! B Flight Larry Culliver!

This year The Club championship was held on schedule. The weather all these days was humid and hot. The greens were not mowed tightly or rolled, so putting was somewhat difficult. Also, due to the golf Courses lackadaisical approach in designating the environmental areas. We played those areas as, if no sign play the ball as it lies, if playable.
Scores were pretty good. Lee Kornegay set the pace in the first round with a 75 two strokes ahead of three others. The second round Lee fell by the wayside and defending champ Danny Butler also faded as did some others close to the lead.
The exceptions being Roman Peebles and Bruce Appledorn, those two duplicated their first round scores! WOW!
Bob Acosta came in with a second round of 70 to take the top prize, 12 shots different than his first round!! Bob carded similar scores in 2012. For the 2 rounds he went 77 66 for the win..

A flight low net prize went to Walter Johnson.
B flight low net prize went to Billie Proctor.

Nice playing, guys!

THE QUESTION TO THE MEMBERS IS: Do you want to conduct your business (buy items) at Victoria or Plaza golf? The board would like to know what your decision is before tournament winnings/payouts/gift cards are purchased!
A discussion was held regarding AWAY events. THE QUESTION IS: Should the membership play an away golf round or tournament on a regular Tuesday OR play on another day!
A motion was raised and a vote was taken by the membership with a majority favoring a Tuesday play, as long as the Victoria management is well informed.
A discussion regarding different tournament formats, instead of a low grow low net event. The board will consider the suggestions. Namely, 4 Man Scrambles, a blind draw, a shamble, and a Red, Gold, White format..

SEPTEMBER 2016

Message from your President.
Members:
RE: Lowering the membership age qualification from 60 to 55.
I conducted an informal survey of the members that played in our August tournament to get an idea how many members would agree to the age change. The 30+ responses I received indicated that lowering the age requirements would NOT be a good idea. Therefore, I tabled the board's proposal and I will get a better consensus at our November general meeting. You can vote to approve or reject the changes by attending the November meeting we normally have after the Turkey Shoot tournament.

Tournament summary:

The August tournament was played as scheduled, on a hot day. The format was a Blind Draw. The board conducted the blind draw after all scores were posted. We separated the 30+ players in to two groups and picked names from group A (handicaps 0 13) and group B (handicaps 14+). The gross scores between a player in groups A and B were added together to determine the low gross and the low nets were decided by adding the player's handicaps together and dividing by 2.
Considering the greens had a fungus problem earlier this month, they were not too bad. We played Move your ball through the green.
There were good scores as usual.

The top low gross prize went to the team of BOB ACOSTA and RAY GORDON. Bob shot a 74 AND WON THIS TOURNAMENT AGAIN!
Low net went to the team of TERRY CONANT and STAN FARIS with a net 159. Very Nice!! See results on next page.

AUGUST 2016
A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT.

The VSMGC board has discussed and agreed to a change in the membership entry age requirements. In order to increase the number of members of the club the board is proposing a drop in the age from 60 to 55. This change will require a vote by the membership. The board would like to see a quick turnaround on this proposal. Therefore, I would like to call a general meeting in August after our tournament on the 16th.
Please try to attend the meeting after golf at approximately 1:30 PM that day.
If you cannot attend that day, Please call or E-mail me with your vote at:

THE 2016 VSMGC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Congratulations to the champion golfers of the year:
A Flight – DANNY BUTLER!
B Flight – RAY LAMPKIN!
C Flight – DEXTER MOON!

The Club championship was held on schedule on a two really nice days for golf. Couldn’t ask for better weather! We nearly played “lift clean and place!” The course was a bit wet, but the greens were nice running, I guess, about 9 on that Stimpmeter.

Some pin positions were interesting to say the least! Like # 15 and 18!

Danny Butler was tied at 75 with 2 others after the first round then he got hot in the second round and carded a 71! Winning by 2 shots over Shane Carlson. Defending champ Bob Acosta had some difficulty scoring and finished tied for 3rd low net

Regardless of the course condition there was OUTSTANDING Play!

A flight low net prize went to RAY YOUNG.

JUNE 2016
A Message from your President:
Our first general meeting of 2016 was held at Victoria after the May tournament. For those who attended, I thank you.
We had Victoria management (Daniel, Juan) update us on the course and when the driving range will be open. The range is set to open In December 2016. We will see
In my opinion, Juan the greens keeper has done a terrific job! Very few complaints about them.. Complaints were filed about sand in the bunkers and the general state of the fairways.. Nothing new there!
Also, we expressed complaints about the workers on the course.. Those workers should be a bit more aware of the golfers on the course and get out of the way!!
We are just hoping the range gets open soon..

Message from your President.

MEMBERS:  Your board of directors are in the process of revising the Constitution and By-laws.  The last time the constitution was updated was in 2001.  We’ve made significant changes to the document and I/we need your feedback and approval of the changes.  You can vote to approve the changes by attending the November meeting we normally have after the “Turkey Shoot” tournament.   Or you can designate a proxy vote by telling a board member or a member that is attending the November meeting.  In the next mailing I will send a copy of the constitution for you to read and approve.

Tournament summary:

The August tournament was played as scheduled, on a hot and muggy day.  The format was a “Blind Draw.”  The board conducted the blind draw after all scores were posted.  We separated the 40+ players in to two groups and picked names from group A (handicaps 0 – 12) and group B (handicaps 13+).   The gross scores between a player in groups A and B were added together to determine the low gross and the low nets were decided by adding the player’s handicaps together and dividing by 2.

The greens were not too bad.   The fairways and rough were cut per my request.  Some fairways were still “in process” as there were the usual bare spots, something we’ve grown accustomed to.   Overall, the course is improving day by day.

There were good scores as usual.

THE 2015 VSMGC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Congratulations to the champion golfers of the year:
A Flight – Bob Acosta!
B Flight – Charles Kirksey!
C Flight – Ray Gordon!

This year The Club championship was held on schedule on consecutive days.  July 14th and 15th.  Because the board had registered complaints about having the club championship on consecutive Tuesdays where some members who want to play but could not fit either the first Tuesday or the second Tuesday into their schedules, the board thought consecutive days would be the answer to that conundrum.  Obviously, the backlash of having to play two days in a row was taken into consideration but changing the tournament schedule was prohibitive at such a late date.   Anyway, the first day was a decent day for golf.  The second day it was tough!  A different wind sprung up and made scores skyrocket!!      I (President) requested that the course not to be watered, because we were playing the ball down!  The management told me that the course wasn’t watered the day before so they had to water on our tournament day!  For the first round, the course was too wet again!

We will go back to the consecutive Tuesdays for next year.

A flight low net prize went to DANNY BUTLER.

B flight low net prize went to CARL BOONE.

C flight low net prize went to ROLAND HAWKINS.

Nice playing, guys!

The extra dollars will help our finances and make sure we have money for our big events in November (Turkeys) and a possible Christmas tournament!

Our next tournament at The Links at Victoria is June 16th the format is Low Gross & Low Net   Fees are $48.00.

Tournament summary:

The MAY tournament was played in Temecula, CA at the Cross Creek Golf Club.

We had an early wake up in order catch the bus ride to Temecula.  Refreshments of coffee, breakfast sandwiches, and rolls were served for the bus ride.  The ride was nice, I (Peterson) sat up front and found a microphone to yammer at the members.

The weather was cool to begin with and warmed up later. At Cross Creek we had a shotgun start and played from the Gold tees.  Many members complained that those tees were too far forward.  It did not help the scores either. Scores were rather high.   The greens were hard and fast and made putting difficult.

Tournament summary:

The MARCH tournament was played as scheduled, on spring day.  The wind was in the opposite direction than what we are used to.   For example number 15 was downwind!

 The greens are perfect!

The pin setting on number 11 was brutal!  All the years I’ve played this course I’ve never seen the pin cut where it was.  I Peterson had a 6 foot putt that I lagged to 2 inches in fear of ending up with a 10 footer comeback!

There were good scores as usual.

JANUARY 2015

MEMBERS:

Due to the fact Victoria management did not charge us green fees for the December tournament; I am waiving those green fees for our January tournament.

For those members who paid for the December Tournament, their Fees for the January tournament will be $15!!

Those who paid for the December tournament but are unable to play in January will have their entry fee carried over to the next tournament they want to play in!

THE DECEMBER X-MAS TOURNAMENT

The weather was miserable! Rainy day Tuesday.

We tried to play anyway!

2 groups actually finished 18!  They did well. Most of us quit after getting soaked!

We started off the day with coffee and donuts.  Thanks NORM POTTER for the Crispy Crème’s and the Victoria café for the coffee.  Also, many thanks to Norm for managing the tournament and supplying all the great gift packages everyone received.

The tasty turkey luncheon at Denny’s   turned out great!  Everyone had a good time.

An election to the board was held electing the existing board members.

CHUCK HOLT presided and swore in the members.

Food was good and prizes were distributed.

Many thanks to Plaza Golf owner ROY OMOTO for donating many prizes!

Norm Potter and Nate Brown distributed the raffle prizes. Everyone got a gift.

DECEMBER 2014

MONTHLY NEWS ITEMS:       HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Tournament summary:

Our NOVEMBER “Turkey Shoot” was played as scheduled, on a beautiful day!  Could not ask for better weather!  Cool morning for a shotgun start, but it warmed up quickly.

The format was a 4-man scramble and there were some decent scores.

A 63 was posted by the teams headed by RAY LAMPKIN, ROMAN PEEBLES & RAY BURLEY (Burley’s team only had 3 players).   LAMPKIN’s team birdied the first 8 holes for a nine-hole score of 28.  WOWZER!

Since there were many tied scores in this tournament we used a “card-off” method to determine the winners.

2nd low gross went to the team lead by GENE HARDY with a  64! OK

3rd low gross went to the team lead by DANNY BUTLER with a gross of 65.   YES!

A semi-annual club meeting was held after the tournament.  Dennis Peterson as president presided over the meeting.    We had a nice lunch of spaghetti and meat balls.

BOARD MEETING NOTES

11/25/2014

Dennis Peterson, President presiding.

Slate of Officers

President…..Dennis Peterson (424) 257-8005

Vice President…..Danny Butler (310) 307-0921

Treasurer…..Nate Brown (310) 631-7286

Secretary…..Norm Potter (310) 372-4110

Sargent of Arms/Parliamentarian…..George Ortiz

Tournament Committee….. Nate Brown, Ray Lampkin, Danny Butler, and Norm Potter

Vice Treasurer/SCGA Representative …..Charles Kirksey (310) 769-0977

Handicap Chairman….. Walter Johnson (323) 755-7715

Meeting was called to order By Dennis Peterson at 2PM

First order of business is to decide who will be the club’s treasurer.

We decided that Nate will collect all the monies, with help from the tournament committee, and deposit said monies in the bank.

Charles Kirksey will aid Nate by verifying the dollar amounts.

The club’s check book and ledger will be taken over by Danny Butler and/or Norm Potter in order to cut checks for various club expenses.

An accumulation of funds from the November, December tournaments and membership renewals was separated ready for deposit.  Dennis to take monies to the bank.

Walt Johnson will assume the duties of club handicap chairman again.

It was decided to conduct an election of board members at the December tournament.  We should have a quorum.  Dennis to develop and print ballots.

We discussed the December tournament format.  We’ll have another shotgun start play a 4 man scramble with alternate tees.  9 holes from the white tees then 9 holes from the red tees.

GIVEN THE FACT IT IS A SHOTGUN START WITH TEAMS STARTING ON DIFFERENT HOLES, THERE’S GOING TO BE A LOT OF CONFUSION WITH SCORING!

AS OF THIS WRITING I SUGGEST THE TOURNAMENT COMMITTEE MAKE SURE THAT THE BACK NINE IS HIGHLIGHTED ON EACH SCORECARD AS TO BE PLAYED FROM THE “RED“ TEES!  PLAYING FORMAT SHOULD BE PUBLISHED AND GIVEN TO EACH PLAYER!

An election for board members will take place after the December tournament.

SEPTEMBER

SAD NEWS TO REPORT:

Willie Armstead and former member Tom Blackmon have passed away.

MESSAGE FROM YOUR BOARD:

Your board members had a meeting after the tournament to discuss some items about the golf course.  We talked with a gentleman from Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation.  He explained to us that they are trying their best to work with the issues that arise with Victoria.

We reported many problems with the course. For example, the ground squirrels, the sand traps and their lack of sand, the flag poles that don’t fit in in the cups, and other issues.

Now according to Victoria grounds super  Arnie Peredia:

“Feedback on course condition its well appreciated, it helps us to take care of details that sometimes we don't see.

Cups and flag poles are on order will let you know once we get ‘em installed.

Water pooling on bunkers, we had a couple situations where sprinkler heads got stock and rand longer than supposed to causing that problem but it’s been taking corrected.”

Also, in our meeting it was decided to have 4 away rounds of golf at various local courses.  These rounds will have our regular skins games and our closest to the pin contests on the par threes!

TOURNAMENT RESULTS:

Our August tournament went well.  A nice weather day, somewhat cool and a small bit of wind that helped on the 13, 14, & 15th holes!  RAY YOUNG led the way in the A flight with a fine 74.  A really good round considering how long n’tough the ol’ course is getting.

RAY LAMPKIN walked away with the B flight prize

BILLIE PROCTOR claimed the C flight going away.

A flight low net prize went to GENE HARDY.

B flight low net prize went to 4 members, who tied, JESSIE FANIEL, TERRY CONANT, CHARLES KIRKSEY, & JACK HAYES

C flight low net prize went to 3 members, who tied, ROLAND HAWKINS,TOM EGGLESTON, and ROY ALBERTSON.

Nice playing, guys!

Rules Corner:

Golfers; we are playing, as ground under repair, the mounds of sand that are to the right of nine green and to the left and right of # 4 fairway.  Remember the maintenance area left of 4 green is out of bounds.  Any questions ask a board member.

ON THE DISABLED LIST:

It’s come to my attention that 3 members are out of action indefinitely.

Tony Fruitt had a 2nd MRI on his back.

Bob Acosta had a blood vessel burst in one eye and has to wear a patch.

William Waddell is on the mend with skin cancer.

Get well soon, guys!!

AUGUST NEWS

Sad news to report!  Sherman Shoupe

passed away on Saturday July 26th.

THE 2014 VSMGC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Congratulations to the champion golfers of the year:

A Flight – DANNY BUTLER!

B Flight SAM WILLIAMS!

C Flight – CHARLES HENDRIX!

The Club championship was held on schedule on a two really nice days for golf.  Couldn’t ask for better weather!   I (President) requested that the course (second round) not to be watered, because we were playing the ball down!  Well, the powers that be did not listen to me and the course was too wet again! The course rough for the first round was brutal.  Somewhat like US Open rough.  It gave guys fits! As you can plainly see the scores were way way up, as well!  For the second round they at least they cut the rough a bit!

Some pin positions were Brutal!!  Like # 3 or #’s12 and 14!

For Example: The 3rd hole killed me!  I, Peterson, totaled 13 stokes on 3!

2 ‘chili dips!’ the first day and One 4 putt the next round!  UGH!

Danny Butler had a 2 shot lead after the first round over Shane Carlson and a 5 shot lead over defending champ Bob Acosta, but that lead evaporated after the first nine.  Danny came back on the back nine but Bob Acosta and Shane were coming on strong only to falter on the somewhat easy 15th hole.  I believe the wind was a factor playing the 15th.

A similar circumstance happened last year.  The 15th hole was pivotal in Bob Acosta’s win!

Danny subsequently “eeked” out a one stroke victory.

Sam Williams walked away with the B flight prize winning with 2 nice rounds.

Charles Hendrix survived those difficult days and claimed the C flight going away.

Regardless of the course condition there was OUTSTANDING Play!

A flight low net prize went to BOB ACOSTA.

B flight low net prize went to CHARLES KIRKSEY.

C flight low net prize went to BILLIE PROCTOR.

Nice playing, guys!

After seeing the scores for the tournament and the way the course is now, WITH REAL GRASS FAIRWAYS, I wonder if we may have to petition for an adjustment of the slope of the   “new” Victoria!

JULY 2014

Message from your President.

HEAR YE HEAR YE, O GOLFERS:
WE ARE RETURNING TO The Links at Victoria on Tuesday July 1st.  Mark your calendar!

Tournament summary:

The JUNE tournament (Member guest/Partner’s Best Ball) was played as scheduled, at

Lo Amigos golf Course.  We had many guests and I hope they enjoyed the day.  The greens there that day were rather poor.  It seems that they didn’t mow them that day. (?) That didn’t stop many players, though.   There were good scores as usual.

NOTE:  There were no flight designations for this tournament

Taking the low gross prize for the member/member was the team of Roman Peebles & Ray Young with a 63!!  JJJ

Those guys are pretty pretty good!

Taking the low gross prize for the member/guests was the team of Bob Acosta & Bob Dee with a 64!!  WOW!  JJJ

First Low net prize went to the member/member team of Louis Gray & Wil Montague with a net 61!!    JJJ

First Low net prize went to the member/guest team of

Phil Glover & A. Watson with a net 56!!  56? Yes, I even double checked their score…  JJJ

This is another example of AMAZING LOW SCORES FOR THIS TOURNAMENT.

JUNE 2014

MONTHLY NEWS ITEMS:

A HOLE IN ONE!   DANNY BUTLER ACED NUMBER 5 again on May 17, 2014!!

He aced #5 Four years ago almost to the day, on MAY18, 2010!

Tournament summary:

The MAY tournament was played as scheduled, a week early on May 13th due to the fact the greens were to be punched on the 20th.

The format was a 4-man scramble and there were some spectacular scores.

A 60 by the team of Danny Butler, Sam Williams & James Brown took the low gross prize.   Danny had the ACE On 5 to go along with the previous 4 birdies and a nine-hole score of 28.  WOW!

2nd low gross went to the team of Bob Acosta, Frank Louie & Norm Potter with a  61!

3rd low gross went to the team of    Bruce Appledorn, Terry Conant, Wil Montague &

Greg Dupre with a gross of 63.

As usual there were good scores all around!

A semi-annual club meeting was held after the May tournament.  Dennis Peterson as the new president presided over the meeting.    We had a nice lunch of chicken Fajitas w/rice and beans.

The main item of discussion in our semi-annual club meeting was whether we should play the ball “down” during tournaments.

The motion was that the issue would be decided by the Board and come back to the Club with our new Policy. It was seconded and the vote was a unanimous Yes.   We did not vote on playing the ball down, but discussion seemed unanimous that NOT playing it down is what the club wants. Wood chips, gravel and balls up against the curb can all be factored into that decision.

Tuesday May 20th Charles Kirksey and I had a discussion with the course super Arnie Peredia.  He agreed to take the ropes down, but we would have to do a "90 degree" with the carts.

That seems reasonable to me.  Especially on holes 7, 11, 12, 13, the ones we have to walk clear across the fairway to get to your ball!

Victoria Senior Men’s Golf Club

GENERAL MEETING MINUTES

May 13, 2014

Dennis Peterson, President presiding

 CALL TO ORDER:

Pledge of allegiance performed.

The meeting was opened at approximately 12:30pm after a “Tasty” Lunch of Chicken Fajitas.

NOTES/DISCUSSIONS

An introduction of the board members was performed.

George Ortiz – our voluntary parliamentarian reported that three general rules of order should be followed at our meetings.

  1. Raise your hand to be recognized by the podium ( President)
  2. Talk to the podium (President) not to other members. .
    1. ..this stops inter member discussions /cross talk.
  3. Be courteous! Do not interrupt other member when speaking, wait your turn to be   recognized by the podium (President),

Dennis Peterson made a short Treasurer’s report for Treasurer Tony Fruit who is laid up with back problems.  As of March 31, 2014 total club funds are $3,394.98.

Norm Potter (SCGA Rep.) was called upon to update the members of a meeting and items discussed with Plaza golf owner Roy.  Norm discussed the benefits gained from Plaza Golf in their recent lunch with Roy.

Roman Peebles brought up the issue of “Bumping” the Ball and after a lively discussions, it was voted that the board would come out with a policy that would be adopted by all members.

Norm Potter, suggested that we have the rules for each tournament posted on the first tee or handed out prior to the tournaments, so everyone would be on the same page. Nate Brown said he would do that in the future.

Nate Brown, tournament chairman, re-iterates if you are not going to make you tee time, please call someone!

Nate gave the Tournament Results.

Nate informed us that the next Tournament would be the “Member/Guest” on June 17th.

Charles Kirksey (Handicap chairman) asked why the ropes can’t be taken down for our Tournaments, as they do for the Women’s Club. Dennis said he would look into it.

Danny Butler (vice-President) brought up the next week’s “Skin Game” and suggested, that because our greens will be freshly punched, that we look into playing somewhere else for a couple of weeks and Nate said “He would look into it and advise us.”

Normally A drawing for new Tuesday tee times is held, but I as president and due to low turnout on the regular Tuesday play decided to keep the current times until the next general meeting in November. .

Meeting adjourned.

MONTHLY NEWS ITEMS:

THE LINKS AT VICTORIA NEWS - 2014 AERIFYING BEGINS MAY 20th.

Therefore our May tournament will be played on Tuesday May 13th.
Remember there will be a general club meeting after golf. Lunch will be provided.

Recently, board members Butler, Potter and Peterson met with Plaza golf owner Roy. The results of that meeting are as follows:

1.) A proposed Christmas Tournament where Roy would sell us prizes at cost and provide a Gift Card ($10 off when you spend $50) to be used as Tee Prizes.

2.) Plaza’s annual Tent sale in August (Fri, Sat, Sun), we would come Thursday evening with Wine and Appetizers so we would get first call on all the discounted merchandise.

3.) Twice a year after our Shotgun Starts, Roy would arrange for Golf Reps. to be at our range for Demo’s and Fittings.

4.) Plaza would provide a $10 Gift card for all new members.

5.) We would feature a monthly “Banner” ad on our web site for discounts just for our members.

6.) We also discussed personal “Club Fitting Sessions”.

We will discuss these points in detail at a board meeting, as we have made no commitments ‘til the board discusses these matters in detail.

Tournament summary:

The APRIL tournament was played as scheduled, on a cloudy cool weather day. The wind came up strong then dissipated. Still the wind made some holes play tough. Some of the greens were slow due to the Poa Annua seed heads that made putting difficult.

I changed the format around for this version of “Red, Gold, &White” to White, Gold, Red.

As it turned out the wind came up and made the Red tee holes play just a bit longer. Also, due to the new sod, I thought that the back nine holes 13 and 18 would play really long from the white tees!

There were good scores as usual.

A flight.

Roman Peebles carded a 71 for the top low gross prize. And, there was a two-way tie for 2nd low gross with SHANE CARLSON & RAY YOUNG both coming in with 72s! J J J

Low net went to SAM WILLIAMS with a 76 net 65! Great!

B flight.

Low gross went to Dennis Peterson with a score of 77. Second low gross with Terry Conant carding a 78. YES!! Low net went to James Brown with an 80 net 65! J J J

C flight.

There was a three-way tie for low gross with DANNY MCKENNA, VICTOR SHIMA, & BOBBY UEHARA each carding an 87. Low net went to GREG DUPRE with a 97 net 70.

APRIL 2014

A Message from your President:

As of this writing, Danny Butler our Vice-President and Membership Chair reports that we now have 101 members!

Our next task is to get better turnouts for our tournaments!  SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOME!

Tournament summary:

The MARCH tournament was played as scheduled, on real nice day.  The wind was in the opposite direction than what we are used to.   For example number 15 was downwind! Normally after noon the wind comes in off the ocean in our face on 15! The course dried out after that hard rain we had a couple of weeks ago.  The greens could not be better!!.

The pin settings were brutal on some holes!  Like #S 5, 6, 8 13, and 16!

My (Peterson) putt for par on 5 from 25’ went past the hole on the left then, due to gravity, backed into the hole!  Amazing!

Here’s a shout out to Bob Acosta and Norm Potter for bringing some goodies for us!

There were good scores as usual.

A flight.

Danny Butler took the top low gross prize with a 68!    Ray Young carded a 70 for 2nd!

Low net went to RAY LAMPKIN            with a 76 net 65!   All right All right All right!

Nice rounds by Roman Peebles and Bruce Appledorn (a new member).

B flight.

NORM POTTER won low gross prize with an 80.

Low net went to CORRNEL TODD and LEADIE PHILLIPS with a net 68’s.   Very Nice!!

C flight.

ROY  ALBERTSON won low gross prize with an 80.   OK!

Bobby Uehara took low net score of 67.   Nice!

See complete results on the following page.

THE LINKS AT VICTORIA NEWS

The latest course news is that holes 11 and 13 may open up for regular play as early as the week of the 31st of March, or sooner!  That would leave only #7 to play as a par 3.  I’m sure you noticed Tuesday that they were just putting down sod on 7.  Apparently the grass they tried to grow there did not take.

ALSO, as far as I know, AERIFYING OF GREENS COULD BEGIN IN APRIL!  If so, we will probably take our April Tournament somewhere else.  Stay tuned.

Norm Potter, our SCGA Representative Chair has an idea

I want to pursue.

Would you like to have a MONEY PUTTING TOURNAMENT after one of our regular tournaments?

Let a board member know if you’d like to participate in a $$$ Money putting tournament??

MARCH 2014

MESSAGE FROM YOUR BOARD

Big news!

WE ARE RETURNING TO THE LINKS AT VICTORIA!   MARK YOUR CALENDAR!

TUESDAY MARCH 4TH!

Remember starting time is 7:30 AM.

Overall the fairways are in good shape now.

I can’t say enough about the greens!!  They are about as good as I’ve seen!

There are still some par fours that are shortened to par threes, though.  Number’s 7, 11, and 13 are par threes.  Those holes should be ready for normal play in April.  The only holes that haven’t changed much are 14, 15, 16 & 17.

We will be playing the ball ‘down’ from now on.

Obviously, there will still be areas of ground under repair.   Those areas will be very visible.

It’s easy to get around with carts as well.  There are ‘cut-across’ accesses on some holes that will help you ‘older’ guys!!

Tournament summary:

The February Partners best ball tournament was held as scheduled at Chester Washington. The weather was pretty good, cool mornings.  Play was a bit slow, but that’s normal for busy CLW!

FYI    HANDICAP CALCULATION using the course rating, and slope for Victoria (white tees).

A golfer's handicap is determined by two factors, which are the course rating and the slope of the golf course.  First subtract the course rating (69.8) from a golf score, then multiply by 113, then divide by the slope (117), and finally multiply by .96 to find a handicap.

The following algorithm example is if you shoot a 79 at Victoria.

This Algorithm  -  [((79 - 69.8)*113)/117]*.96

The following is how one would work the algorithm.

[((79 - 69.8) * 113)/117]

          [(9.2) * 113/117]

               [1039.6]

                  8.89   * .96   = 8.5       is YOUR HANDICAP

After the tournament a general meeting was held and an election for the 2014 Board of Directors was held.

General Meeting Notes:

Billie Proctor club president presiding.

Call to order – Pledge of Allegiance was conducted.

An Introduction by the president of current board members was conducted.

Dennis Peterson (Secretary/Treasurer) read minutes/items from our last meeting in May.  Then he informed the members about the conditions at Victoria and when we will return.  It appears the course won’t be ready until March 2014 at the earliest.  Now there are 3 holes played as par 3’s and the other holes with new sod are ‘cart path only!’

Dennis handed out a 3rd quarter financial summary for members to review.

Floor discussions and comments:

Questions:  James Jackson inquired about who decided who is going to be the President and Vice-president?

According to the by-laws, as follows.

ARTICLE VI. ELECTION OF OFFICERS

a. President. The Vice President shall succeed the President with a simple majority of the Board.

b. Vice President. The Vice President shall be nominated from the current Board of Directors

c. Board of Directors: Any member who meets the qualifications according to the By-Laws is elected by a simple majority of the club members voting.

Terry Stevens inquired about the saving account the club has.  Due to the fact we can avoid bank surcharges for minimum balance, check writing etc.. The president set up that $100 be set aside each month.  The savings account can be accessed at any time.

Election results are as follows:

Dennis Peterson - Now assumes the duties as President for 2014.

Nate Brown, Incumbent reelected.

Walter Johnson, Incumbent reelected.

Ray Lampkin, Incumbent reelected.

Tony Fruitt, Incumbent reelected.

Danny Butler, Incumbent reelected.

Norm Potter, New Board Member elected.

Charles Kirksey, New Board Member elected.

Chuck Holt, our resident parliamentarian, conducted a swearing in of elected board members.   Congratulations to all.

Also, weekly tee times for 2014 were drawn.

 Meeting adjourned.

THE BOARD AND THE TOURNAMENT CHAIRMAN WOULD DO ALL THE PAIRINGS.  The pairings would be of PLAYERS OF VARIOUS HANDICAPS.   He would BUILD teams with APPROXIMATELY THE SAME TOTAL HANDICAPS (as of Nov. 2013).  All subject to change.

IT WOULD GIVE GUYS A CHANCE TO PLAY WITH OTHER PLAYERS IN THE CLUB.

SCRAMBLE RULES SHEET

Each group competes as a team for the LOWEST TEAM SCORE for the 18 holes.
METHOD OF PLAY

1.       Each group will select a Team captain prior to teeing off.

2.       Play begins with each member of the group teeing off.

3.       With the agreement of the other members of the group, the team captain decides which drive is the most desirable.

4.       The other members of the group pick up their balls and proceed to the spot of the selected drive, where they will hit their second shots.

5.       The better of the second shots is then chosen. The group will then hit all their putts (or third shots) from that spot.

6.       This procedure continues until the ball is in the hole.

7.      At the end of each hole, the score for the group is recorded on the card.

Note: The maximum score allowed is double par. After that, simply pick up the balls and move on to the next hole.

Links at Victoria Renovation Status:

Sodded Holes: 1, 2, 3, 9, 10, 12, and 18

Holes 2, 3, 9, and 12 are set to be open to foot traffic only on Nov 8th

Holes 1, 10, and 18 are set to be open to foot traffic only on Nov 15th.

Seeded Holes: 7, 11, and 13

Seeded holes are projected to open between middle of March 2014 and middle of April 2014.

Carts will remain off-limits on the holes with new sod for a period of 90-120 days.

We want to give the sod the best possible chance for survival and growth, so the course will remain cart path only in most areas for the next three to four months, especially through the rainy season.

We did secure additional sod acreage after we completed the original three phases of the renovation project, so there will be certain small areas of the course that will be closed to any traffic. These areas will be clearly marked as ground under repair for those playing the course.

MEMBERS NOTE:

To avoid disqualification, please check your scorecards before turning them in. Players turned in cards with arithmetic errors.

The October tournament was held at Chester L. Washington Golf Course due to recent renovations at Victoria.   There were 2 flight designations due to only 33 players but some fine scores were posted, nonetheless!     The greens at CLW were tricky, some were fast and some were bumpy bumpy!

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE:  The greens near Western Ave to the East, break uphill and downhill towards Van Ness Ave. to the West or (El Segundo (the city).)

Congrats to the following golfers:

A Flight LOW GROSS went to Bob Acosta.   B Flight LOW GROSS went to Sherman Shoup.

LOW NET WINNERS WERE: A Flight: Fred Jones.  B Flight:  Bobby Smith.

THE 2013 VSMGC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Congratulations to the champion golfers of the year:

A Flight – Low Gross - BOB ACOSTA.   B Flight – Low Gross - TERRY MEEKS!

The Club championship was held on schedule on a two really nice days for golf.  Couldn’t ask for better weather!   We (President & VP) requested that the course not to be watered, so as to eliminate too much of ‘lift clean and place’ (no mud balls!) activities.  We would just have to contend with the normal ‘ground under repair’ rules.   Regarding the second round?  It had rained some the days before AND according to the course supervisor (Arnie Peredia) it was watered.  That didn’t help some of the ‘short’ hitters to get a bit more distance (“mud balls”) off the tee!  Did you like those pin positions?  Brutal!!

Bob Acosta overcame a 2 shot deficit to win the club championship (A-flight) for the

THIRD year in a row!  Besting first round leader Tony Fruitt by two strokes.

Bob was very humble in his victory, stating he was somewhat lucky to win, even though his 2nd round score of 70 was the best of the day!

Tony Fruitt had some bad luck on the back nine, the 15th hole proved to be one of the problems.  Tony’s second shot was inches from being in play as opposed to being in the environmental area.  Tony recorded a bogey on number 15 that was uncommon for a player of his caliber!  That bogey combined with previous bogeys on 13 and 14 and subsequently the 16th hole sealed the deal for Bob.

Also, Bob said he was privileged to play two rounds with no finer group of gentlemen (Fruitt, Danny Butler, Gene Hardy and Ray Young).   I quote, “What a pleasure to play with them!!!”

Terry Meeks just blew away the B flight competition with 2 nice rounds. Was that the “real” Terry Meeks? Terry putts with one hand! Those of us, who’ve seen the “one handed” wonder putt, are amazed!  His playing partners said he was “on fire” around/on the greens!!

     OUTSTANDING Play!

A flight low net prize went to Benny Nickleberry (who bettered his age again)

B flight net prizes went to Bobby Smith and Robert Lee Allen who tied.

Nice playing, guys!

JULY 2013

MONTHLY NEWS ITEMS:

Tournament summary:

The JUNE tournament (4 MAN TEAMS - 2 BEST BALLS) was played as scheduled, on

“14 and 1/3 holes of ground under repair” Or, commonly called The Links at Victoria.

I claim editorial license!

NOTE:  There were no flight designations for this tournament

This format required combining the 2 best scores from 4 scores on each hole.  Therefore, we have some odd looking net scores after the team’s total handicap was subtracted from the best gross score of the 2 best scores.  WHEW!!

Thanks for the diligence.

Taking the low gross prize was the team of  Bob Acosta, Shane Carlson, Roman Peebles   and Benny Nickleberry.

The best 2 scores from that group produced a gross of 125!!  What you say!

It certainly helps your score when one player has 10 birdies on his card!

I’ll bet you know who it was?

Bob Acosta with 10 birdies actually set a possible course record of 63, but it seems, it doesn’t count because of the 4th hole construction.  OH NO, you say!

Just think if Bob had made a par on 17 instead of a double bogey, a 61 still should qualify as a course record!!!

Looks like Bob’s gearing up for a defense of his club championship.  Look out!!

Those guys are pretty pretty good!

First Low net prize went to the team of Steve Clements, Greg Dupre, George Ortiz and

Robert Lee Allen with a 78 net total!  WOW!

This is another example of AMAZING LOW SCORES FOR THIS TOURNAMENT.

See complete results on the following page.

 JUNE 2013

MONTHLY NEWS ITEMS:

A semi-annual club meeting was held after the May tournament.  Dennis Peterson was introduced as the new club vice-President.   New weekly tee times were drawn effective the 1st of July.  Members not present had their times decided by the Board members present.

Tournament summary:

The MAY tournament was played as scheduled, at Whittier Narrows Golf Courses. We had a poor turnout for the May tournament, only 24 players, but all had a good time.  It was nice to play on some grass for a change.     Before the round, coffee and donuts (Crispy Creams) were supplied courtesy of Claude Avery and Norm Potter.

The format was a 4-man scramble and there were some spectacular scores.  A 61 by the team of TONY FRUITT, RAY YOUNG, BOB MITCHELL, and BILLIE PROCTOR took the low gross prize.  I saw their scorecard; they had 6 birdies in a row on that Pine course.  WOW!

2nd low gross went to the team of SHANE CARLSON, WALT JOHNSON, EUGENE  BRYANT, and  NATE BROWN.  NICE!

3rd low gross went to the team of BOB ACOSTA, ED ALSTON, TERRY MEEKS, and LUTHER  DUDLEY.              OK!

There were good scores all around!
